サムストッカーは、5年以上にわたりサイトスペシフィックな作品を制作している英国人アーティストです。近年は、日本のアートと建築から受けた影響を、英国のデザインとアートに取り入れながら作品を展開してきました。
本展では、ギャラリーが所在する東京「小金井」から構想を得た作品を発表します。アー ト・映画・メディアにおいて「小金井」がどのように描写されているかをテーマとし、日英修好通商条約・ サンフランシスコ講和条約がそれぞれ結ばれた1858年と1951年、また、日英外交関係開設150周 年を迎えた2008年にスポットを当てます。
日英関係において節目となったこの3つの時間軸から、日英間のアートと建築を探り、ギャラリースペースにインスタレーションを設置します。
会期中は、作品展示のほかにトークイベントやライブパフォーマンス、ワークショップも行います。
また、本展に関連するもう一つのテーマとして「英国のアートと教育/社会」を取り上げ、各分野のゲストをお招 きしたイベントも開催いたします。
カフェスペースでは、イギリスにちなんだランチ・スイーツ・アフタヌ ーンティーをご用意いたしております。

略歴
1977年 ロンドン出身。
レディング大学美術学部を卒業後、エディンバラ・カレッジ・オブ・アートにて ポストグラデュエートディプロマを取得。
2009年、西荻窪のアートスペース「遊工房」にてアーティス トインレジデンスを行う。現在、東京藝術大学大学院の研究生として坂口教授の下で油絵を学ぶ。

Sam Stocker “The architecture of alliance

Sam Stocker is an British artist, who has been producing site specific art works over the last five years.Recently, he has developed works that uses the influence of Japanese art and architecture on British design and art.
In this exhibition, Sam’s works will be influenced by Kogane. The theme is the representations of Koganei made in art, film and the media particularly in the years 1858, 1951 and 2008. These years hold specific reference to the relations between Japan and the UK. Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of San Francisco were signed in 1858 and 1951 respectively and Japan and UK we celebrated the 150-year anniversary of the original treaty in 2008. Using these key dates, Sam has been researching art and architecture from the UK and Japan and has created an installation in the gallery space.
Talks, live performance and workshop are going to be held during the exhibition. Dealing with “Art and education in the UK” as another theme, experts in the field will be invited to join the events. In the gallery café, British style lunch, sweets and afternoon tea will be served.

■ Workshop – Creating another Koganei ■
Using scrap materials including cardboards and recyclable materials, participants will create their own “another Koganei”.
Date: 2-4 pm on Wednesday 7th August (venue opens at 1:30 pm)
Fee: 500 yen (entry to the exhibition and one drink included)
Participants: elementary school students *Parents are also welcome.
Number of participants: maximum 15
Tools to bring: cutter and scissors (also available at the venue)

Sachiko Sugiura will join to discuss situation of art universities in the UK and differences of art education throughout the lifespan with Sam Stocker and Risa Tsunegi, who studied art in London and Glasgow. This programme is highly recommended for those who are interested in studying art abroad and art education.

The idea of social inclusion is to accept and support people who are socially isolated and excluded as an equal member of the society. In this lecture, an expert in social inclusion in the UK, pioneer in realising this concept, is invited to talk about how the UK has been working on this matter, especially in art and culture. Different sides of art scenes in the UK will be introduced.

Sam Stocker
Visual artist from London. After receiving BA in Fine Arts at University of Reading, Sam obtained postgraduate diploma at Edinburgh College of Art. In 2009 and 2010, Sam stayed in Youkobo Art Space in Nishiogikubo as a part of artist in residence programme. Sam is currently taking an MA course at Tokyo University of the Arts and studying oil painting in Professor Sakaguchi’s lab.
